BSc. Marine Science (Hons.)
Growing recognition of the importance of the marine environment has opened up new opportunities for careers in marine science and oceanography. Over 70% of the earth's surface is covered by water, but only recently has a concerted effort been made to better understand this unique part of our globe.
The oceans contour and shape the land, and its currents affect our weather and climate. Along with the continued research into the processes of the oceans, marine scientists of the future must lead the way in developing new techniques to extract the riches of the oceans while protecting them from pollution and over-exploitation.
The scientific study of the marine environment draws upon the knowledge of many disciplines, particularly geography, physics, biology, chemistry and geology. Modern marine science places great emphasis on multidisciplinary study and research. Multidisciplinary teaching combined with the strong research profile of the School Environmental Sciences constitutes a unique format of research-led teaching.
The University of Ulster at Coleraine is also ideally located to study marine sciences, with many opportunities to gain first-hand knowledge of the marine environment and to carry out field studies, both on land and on/in the water.
Local and international field trips are an important element of the course. Practical work is undertaken in modern, well-equipped laboratories with student projects tied to ongoing analytical work in local and national government laboratories. Opportunities also exist to take part in research cruises onboard Marine Institute vessels.
Opportunities will also exist to attain a recognised scientific diving qualification (HESA approved) as well as a placement programme in a relevant marine industry. Our 1 year placement programme to Flinders University, Australia is also an excellent opportunity to gain international experience during your degree.
Successful and satisfactory completion of the course will also entitle you to graduate membership of the Institute of Biology and The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology.
