Dave Southall is a PhD research student in the Quaternary Environmental Change research group. He graduated with a first class honours degree in Environmental Science with Diploma in Industrial Studies from the University of Ulster, Coleraine in 2006. He completed a Master of Research degree in 2007, where he worked on the chronology of a sequence of superimposed debris flows on Muckish Mountain, Co. Donegal in Northwest Ireland.
His interest is in post-glacial mass movements and his PhD project is the development of an age constrained model of rock-slope failures on the western edge of the Ulster basalt. This involves mapping six areas of failures from high resolution Digital Elevation Models and aerial photographs, augmented by GPS observations. Dating of individual landforms by Cosmogenic Nuclide and Radiocarbon dating and Schmidt Hammer rebound testing is also to be carried out. This will be the first time that these dating techniques have been combined to produce a rock-slope failure event chronology.
