Qualifications

  • 1998-2003: PhD Earth Science, Birkbeck, University of London, UK.
  • 1995-1996: MSc Coastal Zone Management, Bournemouth University, UK
  • 1992-1995: BSc (Hons) Geology, Kingston University, UK

Experience

I completed my first degree in Geology at Kingston University in 1995 before moving to Bournemouth University and completing an MSc in Coastal Zone Management in 1996. After a brief hiatus, working on two temporary contracts at Institute of Freshwater Ecology (IFE) Rivers Laboratory, I moved to Birkbeck College (University of London) to commence my PhD on the Analysis of Coastal Change along the Suffolk Coast (NERC/CASE with Environment Agency), successfully defending my thesis and being awarded my PhD in 2003.

I have worked as a River Habitat Surveyor for the IFE River Lab (1997 and 1998), a Research Technician at Birkbeck (2001-2002), a Scientific Officer at Centre for Ecology and Hydrology – Dorset (2003) and Visiting Lecturer at Bournemouth (MSc Coastal Zone Management, EGS Coastal Processes and Systems, EGS Coastal Management and Analysis, EGS Research Methods – 2004-2006). I was Demonstrator (Fieldwork) in the School of Conservation Science, Bournemouth University (2006-2009), where I was responsible for the demonstration of, and training in, the use of optical and electronic survey instruments, including Total Stations and Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) units. I also held the post of Resources Officer (2009-2010), project managing the installation and implementation of a web-based equipment booking system (SISO) and being responsible for inventory management and restocking.

As well as total stations and DGPS, I am trained in the use of Leica Scanstation 3D LASER scanner; having attended the Leica High Definition Scanning (HDS) training course in 2007. Using the scanner, I have been involved in several projects, including: monitoring the cliffs at Charmouth, Dorset for the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Team and the BBC Timewatch: Preseli - Stonehenge Bluestone Project dig at Stonehenge, 2008; having been responsible for the 3D laser scanning of the first trench excavated amongst the stones in 40 years.

I was appointed Visiting Fellow of the School of Conservation Sciences (now Applied Sciences), Bournemouth University in May 2010.

I joined the University of Ulster (UU) and took up my current post, as Research Associate - Climate Change Adaptation, in June 2010.
