Research Interests

My main research interests are using remote sensing, GIS and computer modelling to study the glacial geomorphology of Quaternary landscapes. My specialist area is studying the characteristics of subglacial bedforms (ribbed moraine, drumlins and mega-scale glacial lineations) with the aim of understanding the formative processes of generation and how these in turn influence ice dynamics and ice sheet stability. I also use marine geophysical data from INSS/INFOMAR to map and reconstruct the extent and behaviour of the former British Irish Ice sheet on the Irish continental shelf.

Teaching Interests

I am the current Course Director for the BSc Environmental Sciences degree.

In the first year undergraduate programmes I teach glaciology in EGM105 which covers the basic principles of glaciation and discusses the wider impacts of glaciation on the planet. In second year I teach terrestrial remote sensing in EGM310 where students learn how to use this technology to study the earth’s environments.

At postgraduate level I teach on the MSc in GIS. In this course I teach remote sensing and image processing in EGM713 and examine wider issues in GIS in EGM714.
