Collaborations
The RI has developed links with key researchers both locally, nationally and internationally who are recognised experts in their field. A planned approach to the consolidation of these links has been actioned, particularly with regard to research grant applications, joint publications, and PhD supervision. Collaborative grant awards have been achieved with the University of Pittsburg, Harvard Medical School, University College Dublin and University of Otago, (Health Research Board: McDonough; RDO: McDonough, Liddle, Walsh) and the University of Iowa (National Institutes of Health; Walsh).
Joint publications have been produced in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen, University College Dublin, Glasgow Caledonian University, Harvard Medical School, University of Iowa, Leeds Metropolitan University, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool, University of Luebeck, Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, Neurological Outcome Measures Unit, Institute of Neurology, London, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, University of Otago, New Zealand, Sahlgrenska and Umea Universities, Sweden and the University of Southampton.
PhD supervision has been supported by international collaborators from Harvard Medical School, Mayo Clinic, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney and University College Dublin. In addition, PhD supervision is provided by RI staff to Umea University and the University of Otago. Clinical placement/research experience for undergraduate students is available via the Erasmus scheme. The RI has been successful in attracting overseas students through the Vice Chancellor’s Research Scholarship programme (Jordan, Portugal, China, Thailand, India, Spain).
There have been a number of University funded visiting scholars to the RI: Prof Lorig (Stanford University), Prof Lyder (University of Virginia), Dr Piper (University of Sydney), and via external funding sources: Prof Bader (Queen Mary University, London), Prof Basford (Mayo Clinic), Prof Baxter (University of Otago), Dr Hurley-Osing (University College Dublin), Dr Park (Harvard University). Dr Lennon received a Leverhulme Fellowship (2007) to develop research collaboration in stroke rehabilitation between the University of Ulster and the Departments of Physical Therapy at Columbia University and Boston University.
