Professor Siobhan O’Neill

Professor of Mental Health Sciences

Background

Siobhan O’Neill is a professor of mental health sciences at the University of Ulster who specialises in mental health, suicide and health services research. Siobhan is also a Director of the Irish Association of Suicidology and a British Psychological Society, Chartered Health Psychologist. She leads several research programmes examining mental health, trauma and suicidal behaviour in Northern Ireland. She provides talks and training on these topics to a range of groups and has delivered presentations of her research on trauma, mental health and suicide at conferences locally and internationally.

Professor O’Neill has been employed as a researcher and lecturer at Ulster for over 14 years. Her primary degree was in Psychology, with Queen’s University, Belfast and she completed an MSc in Health Psychology at National University of Ireland, Galway, before working as a Public Health Research Officer in the Western Health board in Galway. She completed her PhD with Ulster University on a part-time basis, graduating in 2005. Since then she has supervised 10 doctoral students to successful completion.

Teaching

Professor O’Neill coordinates and teaches on the Social, Cultural and Family Perspectives in Health Psychology module on the MSc in Health Psychology. She leads the year 1 BSc in Psychology module, Contemporary Issues in Psychology, and contributes to the MSc in Applied Psychology (Mental Health and Psychological Therapies) modules on research methods and research project development. In addition, she supervises Undergraduate and Masters level dissertations on mental health, suicide and Health Psychology topics, with a particular emphasis on research with service users and qualitative methods.

Research

Siobhan has published widely on trauma, mental disorders and physical health. She is a member of the World Mental Health Survey Initiative and coordinated the NI Study of Health and Stress, the largest study of mental disorders in Northern Ireland. She was also involved in studies of deaths by suicide in NI and is currently working on suicide prevention initiative and interventions for suicidal behaviour. In addition Siobhan is leading a series of studies into the mental health legacy of the NI conflict and the impact on future generations.

Siobhan’s publications with the world mental health survey initiative have demonstrated associations between mental disorders and several physical conditions including heart disease, diabetes and cancer. She led the world mental health paper showing, for the first time, associations between mental disorders and early cancers. She has also published on gender differences in mental disorders and access to care, and associations with poverty and adversity. Siobhan has a very strong track record of obtaining research funding. She has generated over £1million in research income for research into trauma, mental health and suicide and is a collaborator on the recently funded (£16 million) MRC NI Administrative Data Research Centre.
