Health Psychology
Health psychology is an expanding area, partly in response to the needs of a changing population who are at risk of chronic conditions, such as heart disease and obesity, which are preventable by modifying lifestyles factors such as smoking, diet and being more physically active. There is a need for health promotion and to understand what predicts certain behaviours and how they can be changed. The Health Research Group contains some of the region’s foremost researchers in the field of Health Psychology. Their work encompasses a wide variety of investigations, including international research, All-Ireland initiatives, as well as local research projects in partnership with schools, family doctors and local hospitals. Many of the members of this group also contribute to the MSc in Health Psychology and are activity involved in the promotion and development of the field within the BPS and PSI. The group has an eclectic range of research interests such as nutrition and its impact on health across the lifespan, lifestyle factors and healthy ageing, menopause and HRT, child oral health, diabetes, young carers, health promotion, pain and its management, sexual health, rehabilitation and cancer patients, behaviour change models such as the theory of planned behaviour and health beliefs model.
Ongoing research projects include:
- Geographical mapping and psychosocial indicators associated with diabetes.
- A psychosocial and behavioural profile of pre-diabetes
- Attitudes to breast-feeding among school children in NI
- HRT, memory and well-being in postmenopausal women
- Attitudes to vitamin supplementation & iron intake
- Young carers
The Health Research Group also has a strong reputation in the field of evaluation, and undertakes independent, scientific assessments of health-related interventions, such as:
- Diabetes care programmes.
- Alcohol treatment programmes.
- Domestic Violence Programmes.
- NSPCC counselling in schools programmes.
- Physical activity programme for older males.
The Group publishes in a range of prestigious National and International scientific journals (BMJ, BJN) as well as preparing reports pertaining to a variety of real-world issues. They also disseminate their results to international and national conferences.
Collaborations
Some members of this group have collaborations with the behavioural neuroscience group, looking at EEG in relation to taste perception and memory. There are numerous collaborations research centres of excellence at a national and international level.
