Visiting Professors
Colin Boreham
Colin Boreham is a Sports and Exercise Scientist of over 30 years standing. He has published over 100 peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters largely on the topic of exercise and health, which remains his main interest. He also retains an active interest in the field of elite sports performance, having been an Olympic competitor himself ( Decathlon, 1984 Los Angeles). He is currently the Director of the UCD Institute for Sport and Health, having formerly held the posts of Professor of Sport and Exercise Science ( Univ. Ulster,1996-2006) and Director of Physical Education ( Queens Univ., 1989-1996).He sits on the editorial boards of two journals ( Pediatric Exercise Science and Journal Sports Sciences) and was a member of the 2001 UK Research Assessment Panel for Sports Studies. He also sits on the Irish Institute of Sport Advisory Panel, and is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, European College of Sports Sciences and the Royal Society of Medicine
Nanette Mutrie
Nanette Mutrie is Professor of Exercise and Sport Psychology at Strathclyde University Glasgow and is also a Visiting Professor at the MRC Social and Public Health Sciences Unit University of Glasgow. She trained as a Physical Education teacher and after working in schools and at Glasgow University she went to the Pennsylvania State University USA with a Fulbright scholarship to pursue a PhD which she achieved in 1986. Since then she has worked in Glasgow University and she has now been at Strathclyde University for three years.
Nanette has researched ways of increasing active living both in clinical populations and in the community with a particular interest in mental health benefits. Her research contributed to the 5* rating in the last RAE received by the University of Glasgow in this area in 2001.
She was a member of RAE 2008 Panel 46.
John Sugden
Professor Sugden studied politics and sociology at the University of Essex and physical education at the University of Liverpool before taking up a postgraduate scholarship in the USA at the University of Connecticut where he earned a Doctorate in the Sociology of Sport in 1984. He has researched and written widely around topics concerned with the politics and sociology of sport and his books on international boxing and on sport in Northern Ireland have won national and international awards. Professor Sugden is well known for his work on sport in divided societies, his studies – with Alan Tomlinson - of the world governing body for football, Fifa, and for his investigative research into football’s underground economy. Currently, Professor Sugden is Academic Leader of the Sport and Leisure Cultures subject group, Chair of the Faculty Research strategy Committee and Director of the University of Brighton’s flagship international community relations project in Israel, Football for Peace.
Fred Coalter
Fred Coalter was appointed to University of Stirling in May 2003. Prior to this he was Director of the Centre for Leisure Research at the University of Edinburgh (1990-2003) and Director of the Centre for Leisure and Tourism Studies at the Polytechnic of North London (1986-1990).
In 2002 Fred was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management and in 2004 he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Leisure Sciences (USA). In addition has been a member of the Council of Europe Working Group on Sport and Social Exclusion; Chair of sportscotland’s Sport 21 Forum on Sport and Social Inclusion; member of Sport England's Working Group on Performance Measurement for the Development of Sport; member of Audit Commission’s Working Group on Best Value in Sport and Recreation; expert advisor to the Scottish Physical Activity and Health Council; member of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s Neighbourhood Renewal Unit’s Advisory Group on Sport and sportscotland's Sport 21 Implementation Steering Group. He is also a member of the editorial board of Managing Leisure: an international journal.
Tom Trinnick
Professor Tom Trinnick is a Consultant in Clinical Biochemistry and General Medicine at the Ulster Hospital in Belfast and an honorary professor at the Ulster Sports Academyat the University of Ulster. His interests are in metabolism and cardiovascular risk factors and he has published papers on the role of glucose, cholesterol and exercise in vascular disease.
Pat Duffy
Pat Duffy is a Professor of Coaching, Carnegie Leeds Metropolitan University. Professor Duffy has played a significant role in the development of Sports Coaching in the UK, Ireland and internationally. He was instrumental in establishing the UK Coaching Framework and was formerly the CEO of Sports Coach UK and Director of the Irish National Coaching and Training Centre, University of Limerick and has worked with European Athletics.
Eric Saunders
Eric Saunders, who was formerly Professor of the School of Leisure and Tourism at the University of Ulster and has been awarded the OBE for services to sport. Chairman of the Sports Council for Northern Ireland 2000-2008. Professor Saunders qualified as a PE teacher, teaching at Edinburgh Academy and lecturing at Loughborough University and Carnegie School of Physical Education. Under Professor Saunders’ direction, the University of Ulster was the first University in the UK to offer an Honours Degree in Sports Studies and a Teaching Degree which included teaching skills in its honours classification. He also played a key role in setting up the Northern Ireland Institute of Coaching of which he is Chairman. Professor Saunders has held a number of chairmanships of Boards in the field of higher education in PE, Sport and Leisure in Ireland, the United Kingdom and further afield.
