Information for Prospective Employers

The placement year provides a great opportunity to take on an enthusiastic employee and contribute to their development as a professional. A measure of the success of the programme is the many long-term placement employers in the UK, Ireland and beyond who offer placements to our students every year. Some of these employers have worked with us for over 20 years and take pride in this collaboration. There are few sports-related organisations in Northern Ireland who do not employ Ulster sports graduates- and for them the placement programme provides an opportunity to shape the future workforce and identify talented students who may one day become full-time graduate employees.

Information for Students

The placement year provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable employment experiences and see the application of theory to practice in a workplace setting. Following two years of academic study, many students use the placement year to sample work in an area which they are considering for a future career. Whether this confirms that the career choice is correct for them or alters their choice- the placement year provides an opportunity for students to gain an insight to career choices helping them to select their modules and research project topics in final year.

Although placement is optional – we encourage all students to take up this opportunity as our experience shows that students returning from placement are able to utilise their experiences in final year modules and often take a more mature approach to their final year studies as a result of a year working in the ‘real world’. 

In addition to improving academic performance- the placement year gives our students access to networks of professionals working in their chosen field. Many of our placement students continue working for their employer on a part-time basis during their final year and some return to their employer after they graduate as opportunities become available

Information for students / schools wishing to be involved in the placement programme.

If you are a student wishing to undertake placement within a school (Primary, Secondary or Grammar) or a school wishing to request a student for a years placement, the Ulster Sports Academy co-ordinates this process via the Ulster Sports Outreach Unit.
