Dr Paul Darby

Biography

Paul is a Reader in the sociology of sport and has worked at the University of Ulster since 2002. Previously, he held a lectureship in the sociology of sport at Liverpool Hope University. Paul graduated from the University of Ulster with a BA (Hons) in Sport, Exercise and Leisure in 1994 and was awarded his PhD from the Faculty of Humanities at Ulster in 1997. He is course director for the MSc in Sports Development and Coaching.

Research Interests

Paul’s research interests lie in the social sciences and history of sport. He has published on issues relating to; the role of Gaelic games in the lives of the Irish diaspora in North America; sport and transnational identities; sports labour migration, specifically the transit of African migrant footballers to Europe; the place of ‘Africa’ in the politics of FIFA/world football; football related disasters; sport and the Irish.
