INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENTS

Assessment design
When designing assessment tasks staff should ensure the following:
Students have time to reflect on and assimilate their learning before they are assessed on it. In general, for instance, the teaching and the assessment of the consequent learning should not occur on the same day;
Where skills are being assessed, students should have had the opportunity to practice the skill prior to summative assessment;
The task to be performed is clear to students;
The attributes of an excellent performance of the task is clear to students;
Assessments do not repeatedly assess the same content or skills;
The assessment task reflects both the learning outcomes of the module and its level;
The arrangements for the submission of coursework are clear, including the date and location for submission, the necessity for students to warrant the authenticity of the work using a university approved coursework submission sheet and the issuing of coursework receipts;
The appropriate resources are available to enable students to undertake coursework assignments. Assessments should not be set which require the use of materials or facilities to which only a few students can have access.

The mark allocation for assessments and parts of assessments is made clear and the contribution to the mark for the module as a whole is made explicit.

Marking assignments

Coursework will be returned within 15 working days or another PREVIOUSLY agreed time interval if this proves impossible;
While coursework shall normally be returned to students, arrangements must also be made for the external examiner to moderate coursework;
The use of mark schemes is highly recommended as an aid to reliable marking. They are essential where more than one marker is involved in assessing the same work from different students;
Sufficient annotations should be made on student work to facilitate the justification of the marks and as an aid to review by external examiners;
Allowance should be made for internal moderation procedures.
