THE SETTING AND CONDUCT OF COURSEWORK
| Setting of coursework | |
| The form, extent and quantity of coursework for a module should be in accordance with the module handout given to the students at the start of the module. | |
| Module co-ordinators or others setting coursework should provide marking guidelines and assessment criteria for each piece of coursework. | |
| Submission of coursework | |
| Coursework shall be submitted by the dates specified by the Course Committee. | |
| Students will receive a receipt on submission of their coursework. | |
| Any piece of coursework submitted after the submission date without extenuating circumstances will be penalised. The penalties will be determined by the School and should be consistent across all that school’s modules. | |
| Students may seek prior consent from the Course Committee to submit coursework after the official deadline; such requests must be accompanied by a satisfactory explanation, and in the case of illness by a medical certificate. This application shall be made to the Course Director. Coursework submitted without consent after the deadline shall not normally be accepted. If the student has a valid reason for late submission of work, this should normally be recorded on Form EC1 and, together with any supporting evidence (e.g. a doctor’s certificate), placed in the student’s file kept centrally within the Faculty by the Course Director. Valid reasons will include medical, social or compassionate reasons. In these cases the mark as awarded will be entered for calculation of the module result. | |
Marking and return of coursework The examiner will provide feedback on coursework by means of comments and grades. |
|
| Feedback should focus on the good points of the work, areas where marks were lost and areas for improvement. Staff might focus on strengths, weaknesses, omissions, structure, style and referencing of the work. | |
| Students should be given a mark or grade for the work which is consistent with the feedback given; they should be advised that the mark or grade is provisional and is subject to moderation by the Moderator, by the External Examiner or by the Board of Examiners. | |
