An exemplar from nursing.
This example pre-dates the development of the detailed Faculty policy but nevertheless exemplifies the approach expected.

B2.9.6 Preparation for Interprofessional Practice
The Faculty of Life and Health Sciences includes a considerable number of students preparing for 14 different health professions, while social workers are prepared within the Faculty of Social Sciences. A working party within the Faculty, with representation from all the health professions and social work has reviewed the standards required for each profession and commonalities have been identified. A series of Learning Outcomes related to inter-professional education have been identified. Table 7 shows these outcomes and how they are achieved within the pre-registration nursing programmes.
Inter-professional education has been defined as follows:
Occasions when two or more professions learn from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care.
The content of the outcomes shown within Table 7 are all achieved within the theoretical content of the programme. In addition, within the pre-registration nursing programme, opportunities are identified in placement to enhance and apply this understanding. In the Adult Branch, placement modules provide opportunities for participation in multidisciplinary case conferences, and the module on Interprofessional Assessment and Rehabilitation specifically focuses on interprofessional working and requires students to explore, observe and discuss the contribution of other professionals to health and wellbeing. Within the Mental Health Branch programme similar opportunities are available in all placements.

These specific learning outcomes for Interprofessional Practice are addressed within the theoretical units identified. However, a number of other units of study also contribute to understanding of the issues covered. Their application will occur within clinical placement modules specified below. |
