FACULTY OF LIFE AND HEALTH SCIENCES
VALIDATION SUPPORT
The preparation of Evaluation and Re-valdation documents needs to be undertaken with rigour. It is critical that the document represents an accurate description of the course. The document is essentially a contract between the University and the student (This is what you will get if you enrol on this programme) and a between the University and a prospective employer (If you employ this graduate, this is what he/she will be able to do).
The role of the University
The document is produced by a course planning committee to a specification recommended by the university. The University documentation supporting this process is available from here. In addition the Academic office organises an evaluation/ re-validation meeting. This scrutinises the documentation and discusses the provision with staff. The University panel will consist of staff from other faculties and external experts in the subject. It is normally chaired by a Pro-vice- Chancellor although due to the numbers if such meetings Heads of School mat occasionally chair. The purpose of this meeting is to assure that:
the proposal conforms to the university (and faculty or school) mission statement;
there is demand for the course (both from students and from employers);
the course has been appropriately describe in the course specification;
the course content is appropriate and current;
the regulations are up to date; and
the course is appropriately resourced.
The role of the Faculty
The Faculty does not dictate any part of this document, but does provide supportive advice. In addition, prior to the submission of the documentation to the Academic Office the Faculty will review the documentation. The review is organised by the Faculty Office and is designed to improve the documentation. It is not intended as a "mock" version of the university meeting. The panel will consist of a mix of those with experience of these processes (Assistant Dean, Faculty Co-ordinator of Teaching and Learning, etc.) and some less experienced members. If you would like to join a panel to learn the ropes then please contact Tony Cook.
A mock grilling of the course team, if deemed necassary, can be organised by the school. If you need advice on this then please contact Tony Cook
